What is a 'Normal'?
In the weather world, the normal is a 30-year average, which gets updated every 10 years.
Currently, it’s based on daily data from 1981 to 2010.
Since none of the Mesonet stations have been in operation for since 1981, we use the normals data from the nearest National Weather Service station.

What is a 'Record'?
Records, or extremes, can cover daily data, monthly data or all-time data. The records are available for the period of observation for a particular station (again, our extremes data come from the nearest NWS station).
For example, the Manhattan NWS COOP station has a period of record that covers 1893 to the present:
